When to Book Your First Private Obstetrician Appointment

Is it ever too soon to book your first obstetric appointment?
The short answer is no. In fact, in my experience at Central Health, the more common issue is not booking too early, but rather waiting longer than is ideal. Many women worry about timing and ask if they should wait until they are further along before reaching out. However, the earliest stages of pregnancy are often the most clinically important and, understandably, the most uncertain for parents.
Early specialist input through private maternity care in London provides clarity regarding timing and viability, offers reassurance when everything is progressing normally, and allows for the early identification of potential risks.
The Importance of Early Assessment
One of the primary advantages of seeking early private maternity care in London is the immediate access to high-sensitivity blood testing and ultrasound. Beta-hCG (BhCG) can be detected in the blood as early as one week after conception. By measuring these levels serially, we can establish whether a pregnancy is developing appropriately and determine the approximate timing of conception.
For patients at a higher risk of miscarriage, we often combine BhCG monitoring with progesterone level checks from approximately ten days post-conception. This allows us to identify pregnancies that would benefit from early intervention or closer monitoring from the very start.
The 7-Week Milestone and Viability Scans
A private viability scan in London is typically performed between six and eight weeks. This is a pivotal moment both clinically and emotionally. By around seven weeks, we can usually confirm an intrauterine pregnancy, detect a fetal heartbeat, and assess early development.
Clinically, this is one of the most informative assessments we perform. Emotionally, it is often the point at which the pregnancy begins to feel real for the parents.
Why Accurate Dating Matters
Early care ensures the most accurate dating of your pregnancy. A combination of early BhCG trends, progesterone levels, and early ultrasound provides the most precise estimation of gestational age and your due date.
While scans conducted after 12 to 14 weeks are useful, they are less precise for dating purposes. This accuracy is vital because it impacts the timing of future growth monitoring, the precision of screening tests, and eventually, decisions regarding delivery.

Choosing the Right Consultant
At Central Health, we believe that choosing your obstetrician is about more than just clinical credentials. It is about finding a consultant whose communication style, personality, and philosophy of care align with your own.
This personal connection is often undervalued, but it is one of the most significant factors in ensuring a positive pregnancy experience. Many patients find comfort in finding a female obstetrician who can provide a tailored, empathetic approach to their care. We offer introductory consultations without charge, allowing you to meet with different obstetricians to ensure you find the right personal and medical match.
When Should You Book?
For Higher-Risk Pregnancies
If you have a history of miscarriage, previous pregnancy complications, underlying medical conditions, or have undergone fertility treatment, earlier is always better. Booking with our high-risk pregnancy specialists as soon as possible allows us the time to initiate necessary medications, plan specific investigations, and coordinate specialist care.
Genetic Considerations
If you are concerned about genetic risk, timing is particularly important. Modern advances mean that many conditions previously difficult to detect can now be screened via Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT). Because this may involve parental screening as well as testing the pregnancy, we recommend that this assessment begins before 10 weeks to allow sufficient time for results and discussion.
For Low-Risk Pregnancies
Even in uncomplicated pregnancies, an early review is beneficial. We typically recommend a viability scan at around eight weeks. This confirms the pregnancy, provides accurate dating, and allows us to begin planning your screening tests and maternity care milestones.
Practical Considerations: London Maternity Hospitals
A practical reason for booking private maternity care in the UK early is hospital availability. In London, places at premier maternity units can be in high demand and are often limited. Booking early ensures you have access to your preferred hospital, provides continuity with your chosen obstetrician, and allows for a smoother coordination of your overall pregnancy care plan.
While we can absolutely provide care for patients who present after 12 weeks, some limitations exist. Dating becomes less precise, certain early screening opportunities may have passed, and the planning of the birth can become more constrained.
Your Early Pregnancy Timeline
Week 4–5: Positive pregnancy test. If you are at higher risk for miscarriage, this is the time to see your obstetrician.
Week 6–8: First consultant appointment and private viability scan.
Week 10: NIPT (Genetic screening).
Week 12: Nuchal scan.
Final Thoughts on Booking Your First Appointment with an Obstetrician

FAQs - Your First Obstetrics Appointment
How many weeks pregnant should I be for my first private obstetrician appointment?
You can be seen as soon as a pregnancy is suspected. However, most patients attend between six and eight weeks for an initial consultation and viability scan.
Do I need a GP referral to book a private obstetrician?
No, you do not need a referral. You can book directly with us at any stage of your pregnancy.
What happens during the first private maternity consultation?
The appointment includes a full clinical review, a discussion of your medical history, and usually an early ultrasound scan. We then work together to create a personalised care plan.
Can I book a private appointment if I am already under NHS care?
Yes. Many of our patients choose to have combined NHS and private care to benefit from the additional scans and consultant-led continuity we provide.
Should I wait until after my 12-week scan to book a private doctor?
No. Earlier assessment provides more accurate dating and a wider range of options for screening. At Central Health, our first trimester package includes all early scans required, providing reassurance from the very beginning.
