You may have seen the news that there is currently a measles outbreak in parts of London. Measles spreads very easily and can make children quite unwell, especially babies and toddlers who have not been vaccinated.

The good news is that there’s a lot parents can do. Being aware of the signs, keeping vaccinations up to date, and seeking early advice about the MMR vaccine in London are all important ways to keep your family safe. For families seeking rapid access, a private MMR vaccine in London may also be an option following clinical assessment.

What Is Measles?

Measles is a very contagious virus that spreads through coughs, sneezes, or close contact. It can even stay in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room.

Children can pass the virus on before the rash appears, which is why it often spreads quickly through nurseries, schools, and playgroups, especially if symptoms are mild.

Measles Symptoms: What to Look For

Symptoms usually appear 7 to 14 days after contact with measles. They include:

  • High fever

  • Cough and runny nose

  • Red, sore and watery eyes

  • Tiredness and lack of energy

  • White spots inside the mouth, in cheeks or palate

  • A non itchy red, blotchy rash starting on the face or behind the ears and spreading down the body

Children are infectious from a few days before the rash appears until a few days after.

If your child has these symptoms, especially the rash, it’s best to call your GP, NHS 111, or our paediatric team before attending in person, so care can be planned safely.

Why Measles Can Be Serious

Most children recover well, but measles can sometimes cause complications, especially in:

  • Babies under 1 year old

  • Children who haven’t had the MMR vaccine

  • Children who have a long-term illness or reduced immunity or are on medication such as long term oral steroids

Complications can include ear infections, chest infections such as croup or pneumonia, dehydration, seizures, and very rarely inflammation of the brain, known as encephalitis.

When to Get Urgent Medical Help

Call 999 or attend A&E urgently if your child has:

  • Severe difficulty breathing

  • A seizure or fit

  • Severe and persistent lethargy, floppiness, or is unusually sleepy

  • Is feeding or drinking poorly with dry nappies

  • Has a rash and high fever not responding to antifever medication

If measles is suspected, always phone ahead before visiting to reduce the risk of spreading infection.

MMR Vaccine in London: The Best Protection Against Measles

The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps, and rubella. It is a safe, well tested vaccine that provides excellent protection.

The current NHS schedule is:

  • First dose at 12 months

  • Second dose now given at 18 months

  • Minimum interval between doses is 4 weeks

Once your child has had both doses, their risk of catching measles is extremely low.

Families who prefer faster access or tailored assessment during an outbreak may consider a private MMR vaccine in London, which can be offered following individual clinical review.

Private MMR Vaccine London: What About Babies Under 1 Year Old?

Babies under 12 months are more at risk because they are still too young for the routine MMR vaccine.

In certain situations, such as a local outbreak in London or if your baby is in nursery or has older siblings at school, an early MMR dose from 6 months old can be offered following assessment.

This early dose is safe and used worldwide during outbreaks and for travel to high risk areas. It provides temporary protection. Your baby will still need their routine NHS doses at 12 months and 18 months to ensure full, long term protection.

If you are concerned, speak to your GP or paediatric team. Private clinics in London, including Central Health London, may also offer early MMR vaccination after individual assessment.

What To Do If Your Child Has Been Exposed to Measles

Contact your GP or our paediatric team as soon as possible if your child:

  • Is under 12 months old

  • Has been exposed to someone with measles

  • Develops any of the non urgent symptoms listed above

  • Has not had both MMR doses and you would like to start or complete vaccination

Depending on age and risk profile, your child may be offered MMR vaccination or protective treatment such as immunoglobulin. Acting quickly provides the best protection. A private MMR appointment in London may allow timely assessment where needed.

How to Protect Your Family During a Measles Outbreak in London

  • Check your child’s vaccination record and catch up on any missed doses

  • Discuss early MMR vaccination if your baby is under 1 year old

  • Keep babies away from known cases where possible

  • Practise good hand hygiene

  • Wearing a mask in high risk settings may reduce infection risk

In Summary: Reassurance for Parents

It is understandable to feel anxious when you hear about measles cases in London. The MMR vaccine remains highly effective, and most children recover fully if they become unwell.

Early MMR vaccination from 6 months can be considered in high risk settings following clinical assessment, alongside the routine schedule.

Taking early action, including checking vaccination status and seeking timely advice about NHS or private MMR vaccination in London, makes a significant difference.
