Dr Tara Porter is an experienced Chartered Clinical Psychologist who worked for 28 years in the NHS, and now only works privately. In her NHS work she led a team of psychologists in Child and Adolescent Mental Health, particularly focusing on eating disorders, anxiety and depression but also with experience in general CAMHS, neurodiversity, paediatrics, and early years. She has a special interest in the interface between education and mental health. She works a lot with young adults in their late teens and twenties facing the transitions between school and further education, or to work, and in their personal and parental relationships. She also enjoys working with couples and adults often facing similar life transitions in family or work life, and struggling with anxiety or depression. Tara holds a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of East London, and an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Cardiff University. She has considerable experience working with a range of CBT and systemic approaches, within a psychotherapeutic framework acknowledging the importance of attachment and the therapeutic relationship. She is trained in Emotion Focused Therapy with couples. She takes both short and long term therapy cases. Tara is a well renowned writer and speaker about mental health, both academically, in schools and education settings, and in the mainstream media. Her first book You Don’t Understand Me written for young women was a Sunday Times Bestseller and sold internationally. Her latest book Good Enough: A Framework for Modern Parenting, looks at the key needs of parents and children to maximise chances of mental wellbeing. She is an Associate Tutor at UCL and teaches on the post-graduate Cert in CBT for Eating Disorders. Outside of work, Tara likes walking her dog, cold-water swimming and theatre.
