Dr Oliver Bernath

​Dr Oliver Bernath is a consultant neurologist and sleep physician at Central Health London, specialising in the full spectrum of sleep disorders, as well as offering diagnosis and treatment for neurological disorders of the central nervous system and Brain Health. He is known for his thorough, analytical, yet compassionate and highly personalised approach.

He treats insomnia, obstructive and central sleep apnoea, restless legs syndrome, parasomnias including sleepwalking, nightmares and REM sleep behaviour disorder, as well as narcolepsy and circadian rhythm disorders. Alongside sleep medicine, he has particular expertise in neurological conditions that disrupt sleep, especially epilepsy, but also other neurological disorders of the brain and spinal cord (e.g., headaches/migraine, tremors, Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, dementias, etc.). His assessments integrate detailed neurological evaluation with gold standard sleep and neurological diagnostics, including polysomnography, imaging, and clinical neurophysiology.

Dr Bernath completed his medical degree and doctoral research in muscle physiology in Germany as a Studienstiftung scholar. He then undertook neurology residency training at the University of Chicago, where he served as Chief Resident at an institution widely regarded as one of the birthplaces of modern sleep medicine.

He went on to complete fellowship training in clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy at the University of California San Francisco, followed by specialist training in sleep medicine across UCSF and Stanford University. These centres are internationally recognised for their foundational role in sleep science.

Following his training, Dr Bernath practised as an attending neurologist at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco, where he led the Northern California Sleep Disorders service before returning to the UK.

Dr Bernath is on the GMC Specialist Register as a neurologist and holds NHS consultant posts at Queen Victoria Hospital, where he leads the department, and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. He holds international board certifications in neurology, sleep medicine and clinical neurophysiology. He consults in both English and German.
