Dr Harriet Stewart is an experienced Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with over 25 years of practice in the NHS and private sector. She leads Child Psychiatry at Central Health London, working closely with Dr Shiri Lejay our paediatricians and Dr Tara Porter (Clinical Psychologist) to provide coordinated, specialist care for children, adolescents, and their families.
Harriet trained in psychiatry at the Royal Free and Great Ormond Street Hospital, completing her specialist registrar rotation in child psychiatry before being appointed as a consultant in 2008. She has since held senior clinical and leadership posts across London and Oxford, including Consultant Paediatric Liaison Psychiatrist at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Clinical Lead in Neurodevelopmental Psychiatry at City and Hackney CAMHS, and Associate Clinical Director at Bedfordshire CAMHS, a CQC “Outstanding” service.
She currently combines her role at Central Health London with a national and specialist position at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, where she works in the Autism and Intellectual Disabilities Intensive Intervention Team (AID-IIT) and the Service for Complex Autism and Associated Neurodevelopmental Disorders (SCAAND). Her team recently won the South London and Maudsley Chief Executive and Chair’s Award (2025) for clinical excellence.
Harriet has particular expertise in:
Autism spectrum conditions and complex neurodevelopmental disorders
Tics and Tourette syndrome
Emotional and behavioural difficulties in childhood and adolescence
The interface between physical and mental health, including chronic pain and functional symptoms
Paediatric liaison psychiatry and multidisciplinary working
In addition to her clinical work, Harriet is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (FRCPsych), a regular keynote speaker at national conferences, and an advisor to NICE on digitally enabled therapies for tic disorders and Tourette syndrome. She has published widely, including in JCPP Advances on integrated models of care for young people, and has contributed to national audits and clinical standards in child mental health.
Known for her collaborative, compassionate, and evidence-based approach, Harriet is committed to ensuring children and families have access to the right expertise at the right time. At Central Health London, she leads the development of joined-up child psychiatry services, helping young people navigate challenges from early childhood through to young adulthood.
